Is your website not generating leads, or too few? The problem almost always comes from one of two situations: the site does not get enough visits, or it gets them but visitors leave without contacting you. Here are the 8 most common causes, and how to check them yourself.

First: not enough visits, or not enough enquiries?

Before changing anything, look at your statistics (Google Analytics, Search Console or your host's tool):

  • few visits: the problem is visibility. See causes 1 and 2;
  • visits but no enquiries: the problem is the site itself. See causes 3 to 8.

This distinction avoids the most expensive mistake: completely rebuilding a site nobody visits, or paying for advertising to a site that does not convert.

Causes on the visibility side

1. The site does not appear for the right searches

Type into Google what a customer who does not know you would type: your trade followed by your town. If you only appear for your company name, only people who already know you can find you. You are missing pages that answer your customers' searches: one page per service, per area, per frequent question.

2. The visitors are not the right ones

A site can receive traffic with no commercial value: off-topic articles, poorly targeted ads, visitors outside your area. In your statistics, check which pages attract visits and where visitors come from.

Causes on the site side

3. It is not clear what you offer

A visitor decides within seconds whether to stay. The top of your home page must say what you do, for whom and where. A vague slogan such as "innovative solutions for your success" answers none of these questions.

4. No action is offered

Every page should lead somewhere: ask for a quote, book a call, phone. If the only way to reach you is a Contact page at the far end of the menu, most visitors will not look for it.

5. The form puts people off

Ten required fields, a budget question on the first line, no confirmation after sending: every obstacle loses enquiries. Ask for a name, a way to reach the person, and what they need. The rest can be discussed later.

Also check that the form works: send yourself a test enquiry. Messages going to spam, or to a former employee's address, are more common than you would think.

6. The site is painful on mobile

A large share of your visitors comes from a phone. Open your site on yours: is the text readable without zooming, are the buttons big enough, is the phone number clickable? If the page takes several seconds to appear, some visitors have already left.

7. Nothing reassures

Before writing to an unknown company, people look for proof: past work, client reviews, reference logos, team photos, an address, legal notices. A site with none of these looks abandoned.

8. You reply too late

It is not the site, but it is the same leak. An enquiry handled three days later has often found a taker elsewhere. Set up an instant notification and reply within one working day.

Where to start?

From quickest to heaviest:

  1. test the form and the receiving address;
  2. rewrite the top of the home page and add an action button to every page;
  3. add proof: past work, reviews, references;
  4. fix the mobile display and speed;
  5. create the pages missing for SEO.

The first three actions do not require rebuilding the site. If the structure or the technology blocks the next ones, a redesign becomes relevant: our guide to the cost of a website redesign helps you estimate the budget.
