SEO pricing for small businesses: what budget in 2026?
How much does SEO cost for a small business in 2026? Monthly market rates, what an SEO service includes and how long it takes before the first results.
SEO pricing for a small business is hard to compare: from one provider to another, the rate can vary fivefold for what looks like the same promise. Here are the budgets seen on the French market in 2026, what they should include, and how long it takes to see results.
Market rates in 2026
Surveys published this year put SEO support for an SME between €500 and €3,500 excluding VAT per month, with most of the market between €800 and €2,000 (La Fabrique du Net, Oxyllium).
| Situation | Indicative monthly market budget |
|---|---|
| Local business, little competition | €500 to €1,000 excl. VAT |
| SME in a moderately competitive sector | €1,000 to €2,000 excl. VAT |
| National or highly contested market | €1,500 to €3,500 excl. VAT |
Three criteria explain where you sit: the competition in your sector, the geographic area you target, and the starting condition of your website.
What an SEO service should include
A rate only makes sense in relation to what is actually done each month. A serious service covers four areas:
- technical: speed, mobile version, pages Google can read correctly;
- content: reworked service pages, articles answering your customers' questions;
- authority: links and mentions from other websites;
- tracking: rankings, traffic and, above all, enquiries generated.
Always ask for the list of actions planned for the first quarter. If the answer stays vague, so does the price.
The audit: the starting point
Before any monthly contract, an audit establishes where you stand: what is blocking, what is quick to fix, which keywords to target first. It avoids paying for months for actions that have no effect.
A good audit ends with an action plan ranked by impact, not a list of a hundred technical faults.
How long before results?
SEO is an investment, not a switch. The first improvements generally appear after two to four months, and solid results between six and twelve months, depending on the competition.
That is why it is often combined with online advertising, which brings enquiries immediately while SEO builds up.
Should you think about AI search too?
A growing share of searches goes through ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity, which answer directly and cite a few sources. Being cited by these tools takes work close to SEO, called GEO: clear, structured content, and a brand mentioned consistently across the web.
The good news is that this work does not add to the SEO budget: done well, classic SEO already prepares your visibility in AI answers. We explain this approach on our GEO agency page.
Warning signs
- a guaranteed first position: nobody controls Google;
- a very low price with no detail of the actions;
- reports that talk about rankings but never about enquiries;
- a long commitment with no exit clause.
